Background:
Nestled in the rolling hills of Rwanda's Western Province, Gitesi Washing Station is a remarkable example of how passion, perseverance, and community can transform coffee. Founded by father-and-son team Alexis and Aime Gahizi, the station began operating in 2006 after a challenging start. Through years of dedication, they built Gitesi into one of Rwanda's most respected coffee producers.
Today, more than 1,800 smallholder farmers deliver freshly harvested cherries to Gitesi. Every delivery is carefully sorted by hand, ensuring only the ripest fruit makes its way into production. Whether processed as a classic washed coffee or a fruit-forward natural, meticulous attention is given at every stage—from floating and density sorting to slow drying on traditional African raised beds. Rwanda's cool harvest season provides ideal conditions for controlled fermentation, helping create the exceptional clarity, sweetness, and vibrant character found in every cup.
Innovation also plays a key role at Gitesi. Engineer Aime Gahizi developed an advanced wastewater treatment system that has become a model for coffee washing stations across Rwanda, demonstrating that quality coffee and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.
The station's impact extends far beyond coffee. Certified by both Rainforest Alliance and C.A.F.E. Practices, Gitesi reinvests in its farming community through free coffee seedlings, organic fertiliser made from coffee pulp, farming equipment, financial training, health insurance, and performance bonuses that reward exceptional quality. Their unique "cow programme," where the first calf is passed on to another farming family, creates lasting economic opportunities while strengthening the local community.
Every cup from Gitesi tells a story—not just of outstanding Rwandan coffee, but of innovation, sustainability, and a community growing stronger together.
