Background:
This coffee is from the Baroida Estate in the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea, tended to by the Colbran Family. The farm was
founded in the 1960s by Ben Colbran (originally from New Zealand) at a time when the government of PNG was actively encouraging foreign agriculturalists to cultivate land in the highlands.
Ben was among the first farmers to cultivate coffee in this area, which led him to develop many unique approaches and solutions for growth in the local soils and climate. He passed his knowledge on to his son, Nichol, who now runs the farm (with the assistance of his sons Rhett & Chris) and attributes the high quality of their coffee to the “old-fashioned” systems that were designed and implemented by his father decades ago.
The Colbrans have perfected their style of coffee processing through decades of experience and built a full wet mill on-site for their washed process coffees.
''Baroida"
The farm is named for a the traditional spirit who is believed to live in a rock in the river running through the farm. According to locals, the rock has been in the middle of the river for generations. Despite heavy rains which have caused damage to villages and the surrounding landscape, the rock has never moved.
