At the foot of Mount Kerinci on the island of Sumatra in the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire’ we meet the farmers of thethe Koerintji Barokah Bersama cooperative - the people who have lovingly and thoughtfully grown this coffee. The cooperative was established in 2017 and has 320 members.
Mount Kerinci is the highest volcano in Indonesia with 3,805 meters above sea level, it is the highest point of the island. It is one of the most active in the country over the past two centuries. Here, the volcanic soil is fertile and rich in nutrients, creating a green and varied landscape. Your coffee has been grown on the edge of the Kerinci Seblat National Park and the sustainable farming practices of the cooperative play an important role in the protection of the forest ecosystem.
There are more and more initiatives by farmers in Sumatra who are organized into cooperatives. Because thanks to cooperatives, they can now share resources, organize training and negotiate better prices. The nine stations of the Koerintji Barokah Bersama cooperative are supervised by Triyono, who leads members in processing and roasting their own coffees. They actually have a fully outfitted roasting facility, including a cupping lab, next to the dry mill.
