Background:
Behind every cup of this coffee is a group of remarkable women helping reshape Brazil's coffee industry.
The Luzia Collective brings together female coffee producers from a Cooperative in Sul de Minas, each contributing cherries from their own farms to create this carefully crafted community lot. By blending harvests from two medium-sized farms and two smaller farms, the project achieves both consistency and traceability, delivering the flavour profile we love while building long-term relationships with the producers behind it.
Coffee farming has traditionally been a male-dominated profession, but these women are proving that exceptional coffee begins with diverse voices and shared knowledge. Through the Donas do Café network, established by SMC Specialty Coffee in 2020, members receive ongoing support from agronomists and industry experts, while also learning from one another through workshops, courses, cuppings, lectures, and online forums. The focus is simple: produce better coffee while building stronger, more sustainable businesses.
The impact is already clear. In 2024, more than 70 producers received quality premiums totalling over USD 30,000. These bonuses are reinvested into their farms, funding better equipment, improved infrastructure, and further training. Members also gain access to specialised education in regenerative agriculture, biological pest control, and coffee evaluation, helping them meet the ever-evolving standards of the specialty coffee market.
Every bag of this coffee represents far more than great flavour. It supports a community of skilled producers who are investing in their farms, sharing knowledge with one another, and helping create a more inclusive future for coffee, one harvest at a time.
