Background:
In the fertile highlands of Uraga in Ethiopia’s Guji region we meet Muluken Mammo Tegeni on his 5 hectare farm.
Not only is Muluken an outstanding farmer, who is dedicated to continuously improving the quality of the coffees he produces, but he is also a father to five children and even happens to be the local priest in the community, respected for his integrity and strong work ethic.
The Guji region was once classified as part of the broader Yirgacheffe zone, which is a favourite origin for many speciality coffee drinkers, but whose microclimate produces such unique coffees, often delivering tropical and blueberry sensory notes, that it was awarded its own regional classification.
Coffee is an inseparable part of the Guji, Some historians believe the local Oromo people used coffee as early as the 10th century AD, although it wasn’t used as a drink then. In those times, coffee beans were mixed with edible fat to create small balls that people chewed on to ward off tiredness. It was an ideal snack to carry on long and tiring journeys.
