Background:

From the hills of Rwanda’s Eastern Province comes a coffee that is as much about people and innovation as it is about what’s in the cup.

This exceptional 100% Red Bourbon lot comes from Humure Coffee Washing Station, a women-managed station at 1,550 metres above sea level. The coffee is produced in partnership with Baho Coffee, founded by Rusatira Emmanuel, whose work focuses on improving both coffee quality and the lives of the farmers who produce it.

For this lot, ripe cherries from just eight smallholder farmers were carefully sorted and floated, selecting only the densest, healthiest fruit. The cherries then spent 72 hours in sealed barrels, fermenting without oxygen under carefully controlled temperatures. This experimental natural process creates remarkable depth and fruit intensity while preserving the clarity and character of the coffee.

After fermentation, the cherries were hand-sorted once again before being spread across raised drying beds. They dried slowly for around 34 days, protected from the strongest sun and turned regularly to ensure even drying. Once they reached 12% moisture, the coffee rested for at least 30 days.

Humure’s story extends well beyond processing. Most of its farmers cultivate tiny plots of around 250 coffee trees, often alongside maize and potatoes. The station supports them with seedlings, agricultural training, clean-water initiatives, protective equipment and small loans to help with everything from production costs toschool fees.

At Baho Coffee, even the grading process is unusually detailed, allowing exceptional coffees to be separated and given the opportunity to shine.

The result is a distinctive Rwandan coffee: boldly fruity, complex and beautifully structured, with the intensity and sweetness that make carefully processed Bourbon such a pleasure to discover
