Background:
A classic Kenyan coffee with vibrant fruit, elegant florals and a beautifully sweet finish.
This fully washed AA lot comes from Mitondo Coffee Factory in Kirinyaga County, Central Kenya, where more than 1,000 smallholder farmers deliver freshly picked cherries for processing. The factory has been part of the Mwirua Farmers’ Cooperative Society since 1966, supporting farmers from the surrounding villages of Kirimaini, Kagioini and Ihara.
Kirinyaga sits on the fertile slopes of Mt. Kenya, with coffee farms typically located between 1,400 and 1,600 metres above sea level. Volcanic soils, cool temperatures and moderate rainfall create ideal conditions for slow cherry maturation, helping develop the clarity, sweetness and complexity that Kenyan coffees are known for.
In the cup, AA Mwirua Mitondo #002 is plummy and sweet, with notes of roasted black tea, raisin and dark chocolate. Look for hints of red fruit, rhubarb and sugarcane, alongside a delicate floral character. The result is a clean, balanced and wonderfully jammy coffee, combining classic Kenyan brightness with rich dried-fruit sweetness.
The cherries are hand-picked and carefully sorted before being pulped and fermented for 12–16 hours. After fermentation, the parchment is washed and soaked for a further 24 hours, a traditional step in Kenyan coffee processing that contributes to the coffee’s exceptional clarity. The parchment is then dried slowly on raised beds for 7–15 days, with frequent turning to ensure even drying.
The AA classification refers to the large bean size, with beans measuring 17/18 screen size.
Expect: Plummy sweetness, black tea, raisin, dark chocolate, red fruit, rhubarb and sugarcane, with a floral finish.
