Background:
Close to the Mexican border lies the small village of Hoja Blanca, an area that has become increasingly dangerous over the last couple of years due to the proximity to the Mexican border and the remote lushness of the hills. The high altitude though means that there is great coffee and it is here we find small farms that dot the landscape, taking advantage of many microclimates, the steep slopes create. Bella Vista - Beautiful View - takes in all of this to earn its name.
Our producer here is Arcenio Castillo, second generation coffee farmer and the son of Felino Castillo, original owner of the farm. Arcenio has since bought some neighbouring land to the original farm and has expanded the area he can grow on.
Trees on the farm are up to around thirty years old. Some younger trees are the results of replanting, but most will be stumped when the quality and yield drops and the process starts again. Shading is provided by Chalum, Tabaquio and Aliso trees, helping to maintain moisture in the soil, fix nitrogen, and provide a slower maturation of cherry
