Background:
In the lush hills of Huila, Alirio Rodríguez has spent more than 30 years perfecting his craft. A third-generation coffee grower, Alirio bought his own farm, Finca El Recreo, at just 15 years old. Today, alongside two of his children, he continues to focus on exceptional quality and sustainable practices.
In 2018, Alirio transitioned to specialty coffee production—a move driven by both necessity and passion. Low commercial prices pushed him to explore varieties that could offer better flavor and fairer returns. One of these is Caturron, a rare variety from Acevedo, Huila, known for its unusually large cherries, rust resistance, and strikingly sweet, complex cup profile.
Once the cherries ripen to a deep red, Alirio handpicks and dries them carefully on raised beds, raking them often for even drying. Caturron’s origin is somewhat of a mystery. Local lore suggests it descends from plants left behind on an old experimental farm near Acevedo—earning it the nickname “big Caturra.” Though not yet genetically classified, it has quickly gained fame among Huila’s farmers for its unique character.
The region itself, nourished by the Magdalena River and rich volcanic soil, is one of Colombia’s most fertile coffee landscapes—home to producers like Alirio who embody both heritage and innovation.
