Coffees from Mushonyi Washing Station have a well-earned reputation for quality, and this Red Bourbon Natural from Rwanda is a beautiful example of why. Grown near the shores of Lake Kivu, this coffee reflects both its remarkable environment and the care taken at every stage of production.
Mushonyi is located just one kilometre from the lake, surrounded by rolling hills where around 1,200 smallholder farmers grow coffee at altitudes ranging from 1,600 to 1,950 metres above sea level. Most farmers tend modest plots of roughly 300 coffee trees, often intercropping with bananas, eucalyptus, or cassava to support household income. These diverse farms contribute to the coffee’s depth and character.
The Mushonyi washing station is exceptionally well equipped, with eight fermentation tanks, a washing channel, and dedicated sorting facilities.
After harvest, cherries undergo a meticulous sorting process. Lower-quality cherries are removed through flotation, followed by visual inspection by trained staff. The selected cherries are then sun-dried on raised beds and turned regularly to ensure even, consistent drying.
