Background:
This coffee comes from the highlands of Kirinyaga County in Central Kenya, a region renowned for producing some of the country’s most vibrant and expressive coffees.
This coffee was processed at Getuya Coffee Factory, which operates under the Mwirua Farmers’ Cooperative Society, a cooperative founded in 1954. Located at elevations of around 1,600 metres above sea level, the area benefits from fertile volcanic soils, generous rainfall, and cool mountain climates shaped by nearby Mount Kenya. These conditions create the perfect environment for growing coffees celebrated for their brightness, clarity, and structured flavour profile.
Like most Kenyan coffee producers, these farmers cultivate small plots, often managing just a few hundred coffee trees per household. During harvest, farmers deliver freshly picked cherries to the factory the same day. Here, the coffee undergoes Kenya’s classic fully washed processing method. The cherries are first carefully sorted and de-pulped, before undergoing dry fermentation for 15–24 hours. After fermentation, the beans are thoroughly washed, soaked in clean water, and slowly dried on raised metal drying tables for six to seven days. This meticulous process helps produce the clean, bright cup profiles for which Kenyan coffees are so highly regarded.
Mwirua Farmers’ Cooperative Society supports thousands of farmers through shared infrastructure, centralised processing, and access to international markets. The cooperative also invests in quality control, farmer training, and good agricultural practices to improve both yield and quality over time. Today, 28% of its members are women, reflecting the cooperative’s growing commitment to inclusive participation.
The result is a coffee that reflects not only Kirinyaga’s remarkable landscape, but also the collective dedication of the farming community behind it.
