Background:

In Kenya a community washing station is referred to as a ‘factory’.

This coffee comes from the Karinga Factory, part of the Gitwe Farmers Cooperative Society in Kiambu County. Founded in 1983, the factory is located in a region more commonly associated with tea but is proving to be a hidden gem for high-quality coffee. Sitting at 1,840 meters above sea level, Karinga serves around 500 active smallholder farmers from nearby villages.

The main varieties grown here are SL28 and SL34, with small amounts of Ruiru 11 and Batian. These grow in rich red volcanic soil under near-ideal conditions—cool temperatures and generous rainfall across two growing seasons.

The coffee is fully washed using water from the Rwabura River, then fermented, soaked, and carefully dried on raised beds. The factory is well-equipped for quality processing and has also implemented environmentally conscious practices like wastewater soak pits to protect local water sources.

Karinga supports its farmers with training and financial access, and the community plays an active role in protecting local biodiversity. We’re excited to share this vibrant, structured Kenyan coffee with you—classic in profile, but full of regional nuance and care.
