Background:
Nestled in the lush highlands of southern Ethiopia, the Halo (or Halu) Beriti Washing Station is a shining example of what care, community, and craft can achieve in coffee.
Established in 2014, the station works closely with hundreds of smallholder farmers who deliver their coffee as ripe cherries. This particular lot comes from a special preparation process, where cherries were hand-sorted multiple times during receiving and drying, ensuring that only the very best made it into the final bags.
Halo Beriti takes its name from the area where the coffee is grown—land farmed by Gedeo families for generations. Here, coffee grows side by side with food crops, tended on small plots that rarely exceed two hectares. One of the station’s partners, Abeyot Ageze, comes from this very community and owns a small coffee farm himself.
Together with Mebrahtu Aynalem, who brings a background in coffee marketing, he co-founded Boledu Coffee, the company that has managed Halo Beriti since 2017.
The washing station spans 4.8 hectares and is equipped with 220 drying beds, giving it one of the largest capacities in the area. Its coffees have earned multiple international awards, including recognition from the Cup of Excellence. This success comes from deep investment in farmer training, profit sharing, and rewarding exceptional quality.
Each year, farmers are celebrated—especially during Ethiopia’s unique 13th month—strengthening long-term relationships and helping Halo Beriti consistently produce outstanding coffee. The result is a coffee rooted in place, people, and pride—one you can truly taste in the cup.
