Background:
High in the hills of Los Alpes in Tarqui, Huila, Colombia, Edinson Noriega and his wife Yolima carefully craft coffees that reflect both generations of experience and a deep connection to the land. Their farm, El Mirador, was inherited from Edinson’s father 25 years ago and has since become the heart of their life’s work.
“We process our coffee with care to achieve the finest flavour,” Yolima says. “This is our life, and we have been producing coffee for over 20 years.”
This month’s coffee, El Mirador #1, is a beautifully balanced expression of Edinson’s meticulous approach. Expect a cup that is juicy and vibrant, with wonderful depth and lively acidity. Delicate herbal notes are complemented by layers of sweetness, revealing flavours of caramel, milk chocolate, ripe plum, dried fruit, rhubarb, red apple, yellow stone fruit, nougat, and a lingering black tea finish. Elegant and complex, it’s a coffee that rewards slow mornings and curious palates.
We’ve sourced coffee from Edinson through Coocentral, the leading cooperative in Central Huila. Coocentral supports nearly 4,000 smallholder coffee producers, many farming just 2–3 hectares at elevations between 1,400 and 2,000 metres.
But their work goes far beyond coffee. Through training, technical support, and community investment, Coocentral helps farmers improve quality and livelihoods. Since 2005, the cooperative has invested over $2.8 million USD into social programmes including healthcare, education, housing, farm infrastructure, and insurance—ensuring producers like Edinson and Yolima can continue growing exceptional coffees for years to come.
