Background:

Founded in 2011 by just 15 farmers, Amka (which means “Awake Coffee Farmers”) has grown into a thriving cooperative of more than 2,100 members, around one third of whom are women. Since 2015, the cooperative has been producing Kivu-3 fully washed Arabica, cultivated along the volcanic slopes surrounding Lake Kivu.

Coffee grows particularly well here. Rich volcanic soils, a tropical highland climate, and elevations between roughly 1,450 and 1,850 metres above sea level create ideal conditions for producing vibrant, high-quality Arabica. Every cherry is hand-picked, then fully washed and dried slowly on raised African beds, allowing the coffee’s natural clarity and complexity to shine.

But this coffee carries a story beyond terroir. Since January 2025, conflict in the region — including the occupation of villages by Rwandan M23 rebels — has displaced more than one million people and shaken entire communities.

And yet, the farmers continued to work.

Against difficult circumstances, they carefully harvested, selected, and processed every lot to maintain the quality that defines their cooperative. Each cup reflects that commitment.

When you brew this coffee, you’re tasting more than altitude, soil, and process. You’re tasting resilience — and the dedication of farmers who refuse to let their craft disappear.

Enjoy the cup, and the story behind it.
